Drury Plaza Hotel Pittsburgh Review

And we are back in Pittsburgh! You may remember our last trek north for a visit to Picklesburgh and the Andy Warhol Museum over the summer. This time we spent the weekend celebrating the Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins! We attended the Penguins vs. Florida Panthers game on October 14th (Pens won 4-3) and the next morning the two of us participated in the fifth annual Pittsburgh Penguins 6.6K Run.

I wanted to find a hotel that was near the PPG Paints Arena so we could walk to both events and not have to worry about parking. I settled on the Drury Plaza Hotel Pittsburgh for the awesome TripAdvisor reviews and decent price point.

Parking is mandatory valet for $29. This would usually make me recoil in horror, but I figured if we had driven to the game we would have had to pay to park at the arena anyway. At check-in we were told a little bit about the history of the building – until 2012 it was home to the Federal Reserve Bank of Pittsburgh. We wandered down to the lower level to see the vaults. Pretty neat!

We were given room 614, which ended up being a handicap accessible room. I was disappointed to only see a shower in the bathroom since I’m most definitely a bath kinda girl, but I figured I could make do with just a shower for one night. If we were warned that our room wouldn’t have a tub I would have requested a different room though.

Our room was quite spacious and the bed was super comfy. No complaints there.

I really liked the H2O products in the shower. (Reminds me of Disney of course!)

We then headed up to see the rooftop lounge area.

And then back inside to see the pool, Jacuzzi, and exercise room. I was bummed that we didn’t bring our swim suits, but I doubt we would have had time anyway.

And since we were getting up early in the morning to run 4 miles I passed on using the exercise room as well. 😉

Guests of the Drury Plaza Hotel Pittsburgh also get a free “Kickback” at 5:30, which was a small dinner buffet. We were also given drink tickets at check-in for one free drink, and two more drinks at 75 cents each.

The drinks were not sold at the bar like we assumed, however. There was a makeshift bar set up in the dining area near the buffet. You’ll be able to find it by the long line!

We got an assortment of drinks including a Bloody Mary, two Tequila Sunrises, wine, and two margaritas to finish off our drink tickets. The drinks weren’t very big, but it was a nice perk.

Now let me back up and talk about the dining area and buffet. Guests get the free dinner buffet and also a free breakfast in the morning. If you’re not staying at the hotel you can purchase the buffets. I think it’s a pretty good deal.

This dining room photo is definitely the calm before the storm, because just about every table was filled at 5:30. (By the way, how nice is this room?)

The dinner buffet this night included hot dogs, nachos, chili, baked potatoes, a small salad bar, and pasta.

Breakfast had an assortment of donuts, bagels, fruit, cereal, make your own waffles, eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy, and breakfast potatoes.

And I can’t forget the other freebie that Gary especially enjoyed – the popcorn.

The Drury Plaza Hotel Pittsburgh is a great choice if you want to be near the stadiums and arena in downtown Pittsburgh. With all the added perks we would definitely stay here again (and bring our swimsuits this time).
