Minnie Me Headbands

Do you wear mouse ears when you are at a Disney park? When I first started going to Walt Disney World, I didn’t. The horror. I didn’t even wear Disney t-shirts. In my defense, my first trip to a Disney park was for my honeymoon. I was much too busy planning our wedding than to properly plan for a honeymoon.

Proof: A couple of photos taken while on our honeymoon, October 2010.

I don’t even know this person anymore!

On our next few trips I had more time to obsess over Disney, and I started buying bows and mouse ears on eBay and Etsy. I bought really cheap ears and would buy awesome bows from Etsy sellers and switch the bows out. I got a lot of compliments. Besides my Minnie Mouse hat that I bought and had stitched with my name, I only own one pair of ears that I actually bought at Walt Disney World.

And then I got the bright idea to just start making my own. Did I know how to sew? Nope. I didn’t even own a sewing machine. The first pair I made I just used glue and felt, and glued sequins to the front. I watched YouTube videos until I got my technique down. I bought a teeny little travel sewing machine and learned to sew fabric together on that.

When I wore the ears that I made to Walt Disney World I started to get compliments from cast members. They asked if I had an Etsy shop and when I said I didn’t, they said I should start one. One of my proudest moments was when I was wearing a pair of villains ears that I had made. I had those on while I was exiting the ride Expedition Everest. A teenaged girl ran up to me, asking where I had gotten the ears because she loved them. 😀

I started bringing so many ears with me on our trips that I had to get a big plastic tote to store them all in, and yes, pack that in the car with us. I would bring 15 pairs of ears for a 10 night trip. If I bought a new Disney t-shirt I would have to find fabric so I could make a pair of ears to go with it. And then I would have to plan which park to wear them. (For example, I wore my Bing Bong shirt with a pair of Inside Out ears that I made to Epcot, because there is a Joy and Sadness meet and greet there.)

I made these “classic” Disney ears to wear the first time I stepped foot in Disneyland. (Front and back.)

The Lady and the Tramp ears that I made is one of my favorites. I’ve never eaten at Tony’s Town Square, but when I eventually do, I will wear these ears.

Another favorite is this Monsters Inc. pair.

And I just made these Christmas ones to sell, but I’ll be making another pair for myself.

Oh yeah, I did start that Etsy shop! My inventory is pretty low at the moment (life has been pretty busy lately) but I have fun selling ears on there. It’s pretty awesome to know someone could be wearing the ears I’ve made at a Disney park right now.

Usually I only sell ears that are completed, but I keep a lot of fabric on hand, so if you are reading this blog post and would like me to make you a pair of ears, please message me on Etsy!
